Le Blue Basset Hound est un chien qui a une apparence noble, avec le corps long et les pattes courtes typiques des Basset Hounds

Puissant, athlétique, mais pas lourd ni encombrant.  Race de taille moyenne : Un chien adulte mesure entre 30 et 38 cm et pèse environ 7 à 9 kg.  La caractéristique la plus frappante est la couleur : noir sur fond blanc, couvert de taches noires, qui donne à la laine une teinte bleue.  La couleur typique des chiens - tan - est également leur caractéristique (pour plus de détails, voir le standard de la race).

La France est la patrie de nombreux chiens.  Et comme le nom de la race l'indique, ils comprennent également la race de chien de basset gascon bleu, qui est un chien originaire de la région de Gascogne dans le sud-ouest de la France.  Les chiens bleus de cette région sont mentionnés dès le 12ème siècle et auraient aidé à chasser le sanglier, le loup et le cerf.  La race a failli disparaître au début du XXe siècle, mais le Gascon bleu à longues pattes a été utilisé dans des programmes d'élevage pour empêcher la race de basset bleu de disparaître.

Le Basset Hound bleu gascon est doux avec sa famille et ses amis, mais un peu distant avec les autres.  Il doit être intelligent et en même temps défiant - des mots que l'on trouve rarement dans les standards des races de chiens, et cela suggère qu'un tel chien est vraiment unique en son genre !  Comme tous les chiens courants, le basset bleu est très content quand, intéressé par l'odeur, il plante son nez dans le sol.

Year of the Dog - Harriers and Foxhounds “The Beagle-Harrier breed is old, with its origins unclear; they were initially bred to hunt rabbits and other small animals. They were popular in England since the early 14th century and were later imported into America in the mid-1800s to hunt rabbits. Beagle-Harriers were bred in France in the 19th century by Baron Gerard. The Beagle Harrier could be a mixture of two breeds, the Beagle and the Harrier, or the midpoint in breeding between the two breeds. The Beagle-Harrier can now be quite rarely found in France and is even more rare in other countries.

Sources have widely conflicting stories about the origins of the Harrier. According to one, the earliest Harrier types were crossed with Bloodhounds, the Talbot Hound, and even the Basset Hound. According to another, the breed was probably developed from crosses of the English Foxhound with Fox Terrier and Greyhound. And yet another, the Harrier is said to be simply a bred-down version of the English Foxhound. The first Harrier pack in England was established by Sir Elias de Midhope in 1260 and spread out as a hunting dog throughout the west of England and into Wales. Although there are many working Harriers in England, the breed is still not recognised in that country. In any case, today's Harrier is between the Beagle and English Foxhound in size and was developed primarily to hunt hares, though the breed has also been used in fox hunting. The name, Harrier, reveals the breed's specialty. The Harrier has a long history of popularity as a working pack dog in England.

The English Foxhound was created in the late 16th century, as a result of the perception of the depletion of deer in England. Nobles and royalty had hunted deer for both food and sport, using the Deerhound or Staghound for this purpose. During the reign of Henry VIII, it was perceived that a new prey was needed, and the fox was selected. The English Foxhound was then created by a careful mixing of the Greyhound, for speed, the Fox Terrier, for hunting instinct, and the Bulldog, for tenacity in the hunt. During the British Raj, English Foxhounds were exported to India for the purpose of jackal coursing, though due to the comparatively hotter weather, they were rarely long lived. Foxhounds were preferred for this purpose over greyhounds, as the former was not as fast, and could thus provide a longer, more sporting chase. 

In 1650, Robert Brooke sailed from England to Crown Colony in North America with his pack of hunting dogs, which were the root of several strains of American Hounds. Dogs of this bloodline remained in the Brooke family for nearly 300 years. George Washington received French Foxhounds, Grand Bleu de Gascogne, (which look much like an American Bluetick Coonhound) as a gift from the Marquis de Lafayette. Many of the dogs Washington kept were descended from Brooke's, and when crossed with the French hounds, helped to create the present day American Foxhound. The American Foxhound is known to have originated in the states of Maryland and Virginia, and is the state dog of Virginia. Though there has long been a rumor that the new breed was originally used for hunting Indigenous peoples of the Americas, this is not true. The breed was developed by landed gentry purely for the sport of hunting foxes. With the importation (or migration) of the red fox, Irish Foxhounds were added to the lines, to increase speed and stamina in the dog, qualities still prevalent in today's dogs. One quality that the American Foxhound is famous for is its musical bay that can be heard for miles. This is actually one reason why this breed does not do well in city settings.”

Decided I want to draw a Basset Bleu de Gascogne and have been sorting through hundreds of photos from the French club site. Very pretty dogs but very few Bassets relatively speaking.

Le Blue Basset Hound est un chien qui a une apparence noble

avec le corps long et les pattes courtes typiques des Basset Hounds.  Puissant, athlétique, mais pas lourd ni encombrant.  Race de taille moyenne : Un chien adulte mesure entre 30 et 38 cm et pèse environ 7 à 9 kg.  La caractéristique la plus frappante est la couleur : noir sur fond blanc, couvert de taches noires, qui donne à la laine une teinte bleue.  La couleur typique des chiens - tan - est également leur caractéristique (pour plus de détails, voir le standard de la race).

La France est la patrie de nombreux chiens.  Et comme le nom de la race l'indique, ils comprennent également la race de chien de basset gascon bleu, qui est un chien originaire de la région de Gascogne dans le sud-ouest de la France.  Les chiens bleus de cette région sont mentionnés dès le 12ème siècle et auraient aidé à chasser le sanglier, le loup et le cerf.  La race a failli disparaître au début du XXe siècle, mais le Gascon bleu à longues pattes a été utilisé dans des programmes d'élevage pour empêcher la race de basset bleu de disparaître.

Le Basset Hound bleu gascon est doux avec sa famille et ses amis, mais un peu distant avec les autres.  Il doit être intelligent et en même temps défiant - des mots que l'on trouve rarement dans les standards des races de chiens, et cela suggère qu'un tel chien est vraiment unique en son genre !  Comme tous les chiens courants, le basset bleu est très content quand, intéressé par l'odeur, il plante son nez dans le sol.
